THE DESIGNER

Company of Strangers was formed in early 2008, by Designer Sara Aspinall in response to what what describes as a early mid-life crisis. Sara had been working alongside Dunedin Designer, Nom*D's Margarita Robertson for over 6 years and yearning for change in direction, Sara left Nom*D to study photography, ironically dropping out after one week, and rather impulsively starting her own label. Born in Dunedin, Sara remembers reworking clothes from an early age, particularly making a chartreuse green hand me down t-shirt into a bustier at the age of 11. By age 16, Sara had become quite an avid op-shopper, a talent which would come in handy in the years to come. Sara graduated from the Otago Polytechnic School of Fashion in 1998, and 2007. Sara is interested in the idea of working collaboratively with artists and like-minded peers, and using the brand as a way to give exposure to artists. Already planned for the next season is a collaborative jewellery collection with friend and artist Anne Mieke Ystms. Sara sees her designs as a kind of evolutionary process wherein she is able to see the potential in something that has been thrown away, giving it an alternative function and new lease of life, but leaving the history of its former self evident.

THE BRAND

Company of Strangers, is obsessed with other peoples junk. The Dunedin based label sees the potential in the ugly, giving new life to the tired, and a completely new take on sustainable fashion. Believing it takes more than one person to build a brand, Company of Strangers actively seeks to form both seasonal and lasting collaborative relationships, introducing a new artist each season. Company of Strangers is already stocked in some of Australasia's top boutiques, Myhart in Auckland, Plume- Dunedin & Christchurch, Angel Divine in Queenstown and Nom*d Inc. in Melbourne.
